Built Around the Operator

The NEW Generation III TF38.10, and TF42.7 represent a significant step forward in the evolution of Merlo's medium-capacity telehandlers.  

While the machines retain the proven performance and reliability customers already value, the latest generation introduces a series of carefully considered enhancements focused on operator comfort, visibility, access and safety.

"The changes are all based on customer feedback," explains Andy. "The 4.2-tonne, 7-metre market is one of the most significant sectors within UK agriculture, and every improvement has been designed to enhance the operator experience."

First Impressions Matter

One of the most noticeable updates is the machine's refreshed functional styling.

New metal mudguards replace the previous plastic fenders, providing a more robust and premium finish. However, it is once operators step into the cab that the biggest differences become apparent.

"The first thing existing operators will notice is the improved access," says Andy. "The wider, staggered steps and the new cab floor cut-out make getting in and out of the machine much easier."

For operators who spend long days repeatedly entering and exiting the cab, these seemingly small changes make a considerable difference to daily comfort and ease of use.

A More Comfortable Working Environment

Operator comfort has also been enhanced through a series of refinements designed to reduce fatigue throughout the working day.

New silent block cab mountings help reduce noise and vibration levels, creating a more comfortable working environment, particularly during extended shifts.

But perhaps a more significant change comes overhead.

The redesigned FOPS (Falling Object Protective Structure) roof guard provides dramatically improved visibility through the roof while maintaining FOPS Level 2 protection. The updated design features a front bar positioned 30mm higher and vertically angled protection plates, allowing operators to maintain a clear view when lifting and stacking at height.

"Personally, I think the biggest change for operators is the new roof protection system," he says. "The visibility is impressive and it completely changes the feel of the cab."

Incremental Improvements, Tangible Benefits

While much of the focus is on comfort and visibility, updates behind the scenes also contribute to the next-generation experience.

A new hydraulic distributor has been introduced, helping improve hydraulic performance and responsiveness. The machine chassis has also been extended by 30 mm, increasing clearance between the tyres and chassis. While difficult to spot from the outside, this modification represents a significant improvement from a manufacturing and durability perspective.

"Our approach wasn't to completely redesign a machine that was already performing very well," explains our Product Support Manager. "Instead, we've focused on refining and improving key areas that customers told us matter most."

Enhancing Productivity Through Comfort

When discussing efficiency, the answer is perhaps not what many would expect.

Whilst there are technical improvements within the hydraulic system, the greatest productivity gains may actually come from the operator experience itself.

In Andy’s opinion; "The biggest efficiency improvement is that operators are better looked after," he continues "When operators are more comfortable, have better visibility and can access the machine more easily, they can work faster and remain productive for longer."

In demanding agricultural environments, these incremental gains can add up to significant improvements across a busy working season.

Powertrain Simplification

Another important development is the standardisation of the powerplant across the range.

Both the hydrostatic transmission and CVTronic versions of the Gen III machines are powered by the same 136hp Perkins engine.

This move simplifies the range while maintaining the performance operators expect from these high-capacity telehandlers.

Smarter Safety Through ASCS

Safety remains central to the Gen III development programme, with refinements made to Merlo's Advanced Stability Control System (ASCS).

The latest version offers operators greater flexibility when managing overload situations, allowing additional safe recovery movements without immediately requiring intervention via the overload reset procedure.

At the same time, attachment management has been enhanced. Operators can now pre-program their existing attachments, enabling them to benefit from the full functionality of the ASCS system, even when working with non-Merlo or Tremme attachments.

These upgrades deliver both improved usability and enhanced safety without compromising operational control.

Designed Around Real-World Feedback

Ultimately, the Generation III TF38.10 and TF42.7 demonstrate Merlo's commitment to continuous improvement driven by real customer feedback.
