Merlo’s Plug In ROTO Telehandlers: Quiet, Clean, and Ready for the Future

Quiet, Clean, and Ready for the Future

The way we work is changing fast. More jobs now take place in low‑emission zones, busy urban areas, and indoor spaces where traditional diesel equipment just isn’t practical. That’s why Merlo’s new ROTO “Plug‑In” telehandlers feel like such a timely development. They bring together the performance of a high‑end rotating telehandler with the benefits of full electric operation, giving operators the flexibility to choose what works best for each environment.

And here’s an important point: the Plug‑In module is a factory fitted add‑on to any model in the existing ROTO handler range, meaning when specified as new, current models can gain hybrid capability.

What Makes the Plug‑In System Different?

At its core, this hybrid set-up lets the machine run on electric power whenever you need reduced emissions and low noise. It’s built around four main components: a control unit that accepts two power inputs (32A or 64A), a powerful 22 kW electric motor, a high‑efficiency hydraulic pump, and a 50‑metre power cable. Together, they allow the ROTO S and ROTO SPLUS models to perform almost all functions electrically without losing the feel or performance Merlo users expect.

Plenty of Power, Just Much Cleaner

Depending on the site’s electrical supply, operators can plug into either 32A or 64A power. Once connected, the electric motor handles:

  • Boom movements

  • Turret rotation

  • Stabiliser deployment

  • Carriage functions

  • Attachment hydraulics

The only thing that still relies on the diesel engine is forward and reverse travel. Everything else? Smooth, quiet, and emission‑free.

A remote-control option is also available, which will give operators even more flexibility in tight or complex spaces.

Perfect for Indoors or Low‑Emission Sites

What really sets the Plug‑In ROTO apart is its suitability for environments where traditional telehandlers are restricted. Think:

  • Greenhouses

  • Warehouses and tall indoor structures

  • Train stations

  • Food processing facilities

  • Urban worksites with strict emission rules

In these settings, the quiet operation and lack of exhaust fumes make a big difference - for workers, for the public, and for overall project sustainability.

  • Still a Full‑Strength Telehandler

  • Hybrid or not, it’s still a Merlo ROTO. Depending on the model, that means:

  • 360° turret rotation

  • Up to 7‑tonne lifting capacity

  • Lift heights up to 35 metres

A design focused on safety, visibility, and operator comfort. Even the electric motor can be removed easily for road travel, without needing specialist help.

A Smarter Step Toward Sustainability

The Plug‑In ROTO range shows the industry is gearing up toward smarter, cleaner, more adaptable machines. Merlo has managed to keep all the capability of its premium telehandlers while giving operators a genuinely useful, environmentally friendly alternative to diesel‑only operation.

It’s not just a new option; it’s a sign of what future worksites will look like.
