How Merlo Is Powering Telehandler Innovation in the Construction Sector

Sitting down with Shaun Groom, General Manager of Merlo UK & Ireland, it’s clear from the outset that Merlo’s momentum in the UK construction sector is no accident. There’s strategy, customer focus and a relentless drive for innovation behind the company’s success and Shaun is happy to walk us through it.

Building a Stronger Network

“One of the biggest turning points for us was back in 2021,” Shaun begins. “We launched a network development programme specifically to build a dedicated construction equipment dealer network for Merlo in the UK.”

He explains that partnering with respected, well-established construction equipment dealers has transformed Merlo’s reach.

“It’s made a huge difference. We’ve been able to increase our penetration in the telehandler market by working with partners who truly understand their customer needs and can provide the right support on the ground.”

Infrastructure Projects Fuel Heavy-Lift Demand

Shaun notes that broader market trends have also shaped Merlo’s growth.

“Continued government investment in national energy infrastructure has driven demand for our Heavy Lift and ROTO ranges,” he says. “These projects often take place in remote, demanding environments and they need machines that can handle that.”

The P120.10, a 12‑tonne, 10‑metre model, has been a standout performer.

“Demand for that machine has more than doubled. Its capability and reliability make it a perfect fit for energy infrastructure work.”

Looking ahead, Shaun hints at further evolution in the ROTO range.

“We’ve been working closely with existing users to shape the next generation of ROTO models. There’s a lot of anticipation around the developments we’ll be releasing next year in 2026.”

Why Telehandlers Continue to Win in Hire Fleets

Even in fluctuating economic conditions, telehandlers remain a strong performer in the rental market and Shaun has a clear view why.

“Contractors want machines that reduce complexity, boost productivity and work across multiple applications,” he explains. “A telehandler does all of that. It’s one machine that can be used for so many different tasks.”

He adds that this resilience is one of the reasons rental companies continue to invest heavily in the category.

No matter what’s happening in the wider economy, telehandlers remain essential.”

Key Trends Shaping the Telehandler Market

When asked about the biggest shifts in the sector, Shaun highlights four key trends:

1. User-friendly design

“Operators want intuitive machines. Better visibility, smarter controls, systems that help them work confidently these are things we’re continually developing.”

2. Compact performance

“With urban construction and restricted access sites, compact telehandlers are increasingly important. Customers want high performance in smaller spaces.”

3. Enhanced safety

Shaun points to Merlo's Adaptive Stability Control System (ASCS) with attachment recognition.

“It automatically identifies the attachment and adjusts the load chart. It gives operators real-time information and improves safety without reducing productivity.”

He also highlights the integrated stabilisers on Panoramic models.

“They sit within the machine’s width, so you get improved stability while keeping a compact footprint.”

4. Electrification

“The move towards electric and hybrid telehandlers is accelerating and we’re investing heavily in this area. We’ve already had industry recognition here, and demand is only going to increase.”

Meeting Market Needs with Greater Choice and Capability

Merlo’s product range continues to expand to meet the growing needs of UK contractors and hire companies.

“Our Heavy Lift models are doing incredibly well, particularly in primary construction,” Shaun says. “Stabilised telehandlers are ideal for housebuilding and steel erection, while our 360‑degree ROTO models, with lift heights up to 35 metres, are increasingly used as mobile alternatives to small cranes.”

He adds that attachments play a crucial role in machine versatility.

“Pallet forks, buckets, winches, platforms the more tasks a single machine can handle, the more value it offers, especially to rental fleets.”

Smarter Fleet Management Through MerloMobility

Telematics is another growing focus for the company. “MerloMobility, our in-house telematics system, has been a real game changer for rental businesses,” Shaun explains. “You get real-time insight into uptime, fuel consumption, operating hours, servicing needs. It helps fleets stay productive, improves turnaround time, reduces misuse and ultimately boosts return on investment.”

Looking Ahead to 2026 and Beyond

As we wrap up, Shaun reflects on what’s next. “Continuous innovation is part of Merlo’s DNA. The new products we showcased at BAUMA (in 2025) will start reaching our dealer network throughout 2026. They’re designed to meet the future needs of construction, rental and infrastructure sectors, and we’re excited about what’s to come.”

Merlo’s commitment to safety, innovation and customer-focused engineering has helped shape the telehandler market for more than 60 years. And after speaking with Shaun Groom, it’s clear the next chapter is set to be just as forward-thinking.
